ReUse and UpCycle Clothing Truths, How To Do It

ReUse and UpCycle Clothing

Did you know that Americans throw away over 14 million tons of textiles every year? In 2018 the amount was 17 million tons, according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). When I start reading about tons, I convert it to pounds, 2,000 of them at a time! That is 34 Billion pounds of textiles, rags or leather goods, scraps to sample clothing. What if we could reuse or upcycle those items instead?

I have talked and wrote about this before, what upcycling means. In this day and age where creating can be taken to an art form, why buy from a big box store? Instead, you can support a small art business that creates fashion. I design each piece with my creative flair, reusing materials, dyeing cloths and fabrics, and making something beautiful.

I upcycle (reuse discarded objects or materials in such a way as to create a product of higher quality or value than the original) leather and tapestry upholstery fabrics, two very heavy materials. These become part of my handbag collections that you can see with the Arden Town Bag, the Santa Clara UpCycle bag, or the San Francisco Bag with its faux leather.

So, the next time you are shopping, may I suggest you come by my shop? Maybe visit me at the Sacramento Center for the Textile Arts on November 13th for the Art to Wear & More Show and Sale. The Fashion show is at 10 am.
